BBC iPlayer announcement

The BBC has announced that users of the iPlayer will have to log in with a personal account from sometime next year.  Don't worry - there is no cost to creating an account.  I have has one for a few years and it has allowed me to personalise some of the BBC content.

The BBC cites the reason for the account to permit the use of the iPlayer is because they wish to make its services more localised.

Since the beginning of September people watching BBC programmes using the iPlayer have been required to have a TV licence.  Previously there was a loophole in that if you didn't watch live TV (i.e. you were using the catch up service) you didn't need a licence.
