I suspect that when you visit an art gallery, and stand close to a picture you will probably be warned by the curators to move back. However with Google's online cultural institute you will not get this problem. Goolge has just added a thousand paintings in "gigapixel" definition (that's an astonishing one billion pixels) to its cultural institute. If you zoom into any of these pictures you will be able to seen the finer detail, even down to the daubs of paint that the artist used.
