Report Fraud and Cyber Crime

Fraud (and cyber-crime) is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person.  The Annual Fraud Indicator 2016 estimates the cost of fraud to the UK alone is £193bn a year, though in fact, the cost is likely to be much higher.

So, why should you report Fraud & other types of Cyber Crime; well:

  • Fraud is a serious crime –

Some people think that fraud is a victimless crime, or that it’s not as serious as other crimes. This is not true. Fraudsters are often part of serious organised criminal gangs, who use the money to fund other crimes such as human trafficking, illegal firearms trade and terrorism.

  • Fraud costs you money

Fraud has repercussions for everyone, whether or not they are a direct victim of the crime.  This money has to be repaid somehow, which means that the cost of products and services increase for us all.

By you reporting fraud and cyber-crime to such institutions as Action Fraud it ensures that the correct crime reporting procedures are followed.  For instance they will ensure it is passed on the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), which is overseen by the police.

Making a report to Action Fraud also means that you will receive a police crime reference number, sometimes necessary for insurance purposes.

You can simply and easily report a fraud or cyber-crime to Action Fraud by use of the following:

Action Fraud online fraud reporting tool

Or

Call 0300 123 2040 (cost the same as a call to local landline phone numbers) and speak to a specialist adviser.

In addition:

  • You can ask for assistance at any Highway Support Session (details of which are in the Calendar).
  • To help you understand which fraud you've been affected by, Action Fraud have categorised them into an alphabetical list at the following link:

Note:

If you wish to make a report but want to remain anonymous then you will need to call the above telephone No and not use the online reporting tool.
